Customer Profile: The Wolfe County Search and Rescue Team

In east-central Kentucky youâ€™ll find the Red River Gorgeâ€”29,000 acres of sandstone cliffs, rock shelters, waterfalls and natural bridges that attract close to a million adventure-seeking hikers, backpackers and rock climbers a year. Youâ€™ll also find the Wolfe County Search and Rescue Teamâ€”30 men and women who make it their job to rescue those hikers, backpackers and rock climbers when things go wrong in this rugged terrain.
To put it simply, the WCSARTâ€™s mission is â€œgetting people out alive,â€ said Drew Stevens, the teamâ€™s coordinator. Weâ€™re proud to call this group a TeamSnap customer.
The WCSART is a team of volunteers who specialize in conducting any sort of wilderness search and rescue in the Red River Gorge area, including searching for lost hikers, treating and carrying out someone who broke a leg on the trails, or conducting cliff rescues when someone falls off a face and has sustained major injuries. They conduct 50 rescue missions per yearâ€”on a slow year. The numbers go up from there.
â€œBusy season hits and itâ€™s go time,â€ Stevens said. â€œWe might only have a couple calls in January, but then April hits and itâ€™s raining cats and dogs. On a holiday weekend or when itâ€™s particularly nice weather, we know weâ€™ll get called.â€
Calls range from lost-and-found cases to extreme life-or-death situations. When I interviewed Stevens for this story, he was working his day job as a naturalist in Natural Bridge State Park but had come off a rescue mission the night before in which four day-hikers from Cincinnati had set out with no map, no food and no water, gotten lost and called 911 from a cell phone close to midnight. Because of the areaâ€™s natural features, hiking at night can be truly treacherous; you might not see a cliff until youâ€™re headed down it. Stevens and his team found the hikers via a GPS positioning app and led them back to civilization. He called this mission a â€œquick and easy one.â€
OneÂ that canâ€™t be described as such happened a couple years ago, when a group of teenagers who werenâ€™t trained in rock climbing set out to climb a 60-foot cliff. One flipped and fell on his back, breaking multiple bones. When members of the WCSART reached him, he was vomiting blood and floating in and out of consciousness. The team got him out of the canyon to a waiting helicopter that lifted him to the hospital. Two years later, heâ€™s now learning to walk again.
â€œOur team has a great track record,â€ Stevens said. â€œIf theyâ€™re alive when weâ€™re called, theyâ€™re alive when we hand them over to the EMS.â€
Youâ€™d think such a valuable operation wouldnâ€™t be so underfunded, but like so many other parks initiatives, thatâ€™s the case. The WCSART can only count on $1,400 a year for equipment, training and whatever else they need; the rest of their budget they get through donations and grants. They donâ€™t even have a building to call their own. So when a call comes in, Stevens and the groupâ€™s other leaders have to act fast to mobilize a distributed team with members who have the skills pertaining to that particular mission.
Thatâ€™s where TeamSnap comes in. They looked into other apps and programs geared more toward search and rescue teams but found them to be too expensive. They found TeamSnapâ€™s roster and messaging tools to be the right fit at the right price for their dispatching needs.
â€œBeing chronically underfunded, incredibly so, having an affordable option to accomplish this has been paramount,â€ Stevens said. â€œItâ€™s helped us become even more efficient.â€
The group uses TeamSnapâ€™s roster feature to track who has what skills and to easily keep track of each memberâ€™s most up-to-date contact information. When a call comes in, mission leaders can find the volunteers with the right skills to fit that specific mission and then use TeamSnapâ€™s messaging abilities to mobilize those members on the fly. The group uses even more of TeamSnapâ€™s features to help scheduleÂ training.
â€œWe constantly train; even though itâ€™s an all volunteer squad, we take a very professional approach, and we want to do the best job we can to serve the people weâ€™re helping,â€ Stevens said. â€œBeing able to schedule training events in the calendar and know who will and wonâ€™t be available is great. We might do an all-day thing and track whoâ€™s bringing what for the potluck lunch, and TeamSnap has been an affordable option to accomplish those goals for us.â€
